How to stop cats from waking us up at night?

I have two 6 month old kittens who are the greatest kittens ever but are ridiculously annoying at night.

One of them licks our faces every hour or so to wake us up and it really hurts! The other has a very powerful meow and whenever he hears his brother wake us up, he runs over and screams to keep us awake.

We've tried locking them out of our room but they howl and scratch all night and it's even harder to sleep than when they're in the room.

We play with them a lot (at least an hour a day) in addition to the time they spend playing together so they're not understimulated. We've tried to tire them out right before bed by keeping them awake and playing for about 2 hours and it keeps them asleep until the middle of the night but once they wake up, they're back to being annoying.

Any suggestions?
