I've been interested in raising prairie dogs for a while now and have been informed they're illegal in some states. Missouri has a law about no captive wildlife without a permit or it must be obtained via a breeder and a vet even told me they're illegal and stated an act from years back, but there's a USDA licensed breeder of prairie dogs in Missouri who is telling me that they're licensed and available for sale.
I can't tell if the law applies to them because they're native, the vet is just inexperienced, or if I'm just lacking a permit.
I have emailed the Missouri Department of Conservation who told me to email the Department of Agriculture.
I did. Multiple times. I sent another email today, but my messages from months back have gone unanswered. Are there any prairie dog owners here who can answer this? I want to make sure it's legal, and whether I need a permit before I proceed.
Thank you! And sorry in advance about my grammar - I'm writing this as I'm getting ready for work and I'm in a hurry!
