I have crippling anxiety that my cats are going to die in an apartment fire. Advice?

My partner and I moved into a high rise apartment two months ago, and I brought my two wonderful kitties with us. Last week we experienced a fire alarm in the middle of the night. Getting the cats into their carriers with the alarm going off and the fear in our voices/actions was a huge ordeal, one of the cats ran under the bed, then under the couch, and took several minutes to finally secure in her carrier and run down the stairs to the ground level. It ended up being a false alarm, but I am now ruined by the anxiety that if we experience a real fire in the future, my cats may die, especially if I am not there to ensure that they get out safely. I am terrified to know that I am forced to trust all the other tenants in the building to ensure that my cats are safe--that one irresponsible idiot who falls asleep with a lit cigarette might be the reason for their death. Does anyone else living in an apartment deal with this anxiety? How do you cope?
