Is it possible to grieve your pet's death for too long?

I lost one of my childhood cats several years ago and never really completely stopped grieving, it's not unusual for me to begin crying over it even to this day.

I guess sometimes I'm kind of embarrassed and anxious about it, concerned that people might think I'm being over emotional or have been upset over his death for way longer than I should be.

Is my grieving valid or should I not be feeling like this anymore? To be completely honest I don't see myself ever being completely free of the grief I feel over him,
