Kitten with a birth defect question. Atresia was diagnosed due to birth defect. Vet suggested giving her away or putting her down despite cat seeming to develop normally.

So straight to the point. Kitten is about 6 months old, from vet report everything but the atresia is in perfect norm, she is lively and brings joy to the flat. Both me and my flat mate had not much ideas about cats, we though her pooing patterns were more or less normal cause she was still a kitten. During normal checkup and flea treatment, We found out due to birth defect, she does not have normal rectum. Basically she pooes through her vagina.

The options we were presented were either a very expensive surgery which we cannot afford, giving her away to shelter where she might get treated properly or putting her down. Vet tried to talk us out of keeping the cat reasoning that at some point, no matter what we do, she will get infected and putting her down will be only solution at this point.

It was hard for us to believe, couple weeks the cat spent with us she seemed 99% okay, eating, cleaning herself, playing normally. Maybe being a bit messy was the issue.

Does anyone have any sort of experience with similar matters? We are considering keeping her as she is just paying close attention to what she eats to avoid constipation. Cat has no contact with other pets and on 4th floor she does not go outside. My flat ate and i think that this migh reduce the likelihood of infection. Or maybe it is indeed big problem as vet has outlined it, kitten poops irregularly, often has dirty butt and despite our efforts to help her clean this area its still an issue.

Based in uk, I’d appreciate all info
