Lost cat / Moving soon

My girlfriend and I are in the problematic situation that we are forced to move from our apartment because of mold and bad indoor climate.

However, our real problem is because of our cat. We had to move away in the weekend and couldn't stay in the apartment, but our cat is both an outdoor and indoor cat. So when we came to get him at Sunday he was gone.

We didn't think much about it and left some food indoor and a window open. The next day we came to look for him, he had eaten some food but was no were to be found. We waited in the apartment for 4 hours but had to leave since we had to go to sleep and work the next day. Next day we got there but he hadn't been home to eat, so i began looking around the neighbourhood and asking our neighbour if they had seen him. After 2 hours i found him roaming near some traintracks, about 500 meters from home (but 1,2 km since you have to walk around to get to the place). I managed to snatch him up but had to walk with him for 4 minutes since i forgot to grab the transporter with me (stupid mistake). I got within 2 houses of our home and then a car came and honked. It scared the cat but i tried to hold him tighter. Then a new car came and honked and scared him so much that he fought his way out of my grasp. He sprinted away while i tried to follow him. Needless to say i couldn't keep up and he was gone yet again.

I tried to wait/search 4 hours for him to get back, but he didn't return. He will without a doubt get back to our apartment at 3-4 am to get food and then leave yet again.

So my question is - How are we supposed to get him back if he only returns at 2-4 am, while we sleep 10 miles away and have to work from 8 to 16 everyday? We asked our neighbours to take him in there house if they find him, however, i think he might be afraid of me now and fear he might think we left him behind.

Hopes are still high, but my girlfriend is losing faith.
