About a week ago, I adopted my very first cat from the humane society. She's 4 and a half, and very shy, but so loving and gentle. I'm a little concerned about her nervousness levels, since she's constantly hiding.
I use our bedroom as a "safe room" and she's always under the bed. Anytime I even look at her while she's exploring, she'll dart back under. During the day, while I'm at work or school, it seems like she's only under the bed unless she needs to eat or poop. She doesn't even scratch furniture or use the cat tower/bed.
The thing is, when I'm around, she'll come out and play, and she'll constantly roll over and around when she's coaxed. When I go to the bathroom to take a shit, she follows me. But I would love love love to get to a point where she permanently resists going under the bed and is confident enough to roam out in the open or even stay on top of my bed. It just seems like it'll never happen, and the under-bed is now her forever spot? What should I do, if anything?
I've never forcefully dragged her out from under there, she just comes up to me whenever. Thanks for anyone who's reading and wants to give a beginner cat owner some advice 🥺
