How to train cat to use new litter type?

Been using clumping clay litter for a while, noticed that my young cat is eating bits that track around or eating the bits that get stuck in his paws. I don't think this is healthy and I cant always be around to stop him. I want to use wood pellet litter since it won't get stuck in his paws as they are large pellets. Whats the best way to get him to use the new pellet litter? I followed the instructions on the bag to mix a little bit of the pellets at a time into his current litter, but I think it confused him and he tried to eat it.....any help appreciated.

Also, any recommendations for a brand of wood pellet litter? I heard tractor supply co pellets are popular but they dont ship to where I live. I do live near bigger stores like home depot, lowes, and ace hardware though. Im trying to not buy the expensive brands at petco.
