I recently moved to a graduate program across the country, and to combat my anxiety and loneliness I wanted to adopt a pet to be a companion to me. I have pretty moderate cat allergies, but I don’t feel that at this time in my life I can devote the time that a dog would need for proper care. My answer to this dilemma was to adopt a Siberian kitten which are meant to be pretty much hypoallergenic, which I thought was the perfect resolution. However they are EXPENSIVE. I found a breeder near me with near perfect reviews and spent over $2k to get a kitten, which I brought home last week.
My kitten is an absolute joy in my life, and I already love her so much. She is the most affectionate, social, and outgoing kitten I’ve ever met. My issue is is that I am still allergic to her. I am having a hard time deciding what to do: on one hand I spent a lot of money and the breeder knows I chose a Siberian for allergy reasons, but on the other hand I believe that when you adopt a pet it should be for the duration of their life and I don’t want to give up on her especially because I did previously know I am indeed allergic to cats.
I’m wondering what you guys feel like the best route for me to take would be, and offer up some advice on how you would proceed: should I contact my breeder? If you have any advice on really really effective allergy medication (I’ve been taking like 4 Claritin a day and it’s not cutting it). Have any of you developed a tolerance to cats, if so how long did take? Etc.
