I have a 14 year old hound dog who became suddenly sick from an internal infection. Vet still hasn't nailed it down but thinks it is probably a liver/gallbladder issue, maybe cancer, along with a heart problem.
The antibiotics the vet prescribed are appetite suppressants. She stopped eating and got very thin and weak. She would spit out anything we hand fed her.
Another customer with his dog at the vet yesterday suggested putting peanut butter on a thin soft spatula, then while holding dog's mouth open, smear it into the roof of the mouth. (Peanut butter is a good source of protein and healthy fat,)
It works!! The only thing my dog can do is work her tongue around and make faces as it eventually gets swallowed. She ties to spit it out but can't. I can get her to eat a tablespoon and repeat a few times.
This technique will work when you mix soft dog food into the peanut butter too but it has to be mostly peanut butter. If your dog is sick and won't eat try this. It might save their life until they can get over the illness.
Important! Peanut butter must NOT have Xylitol sweetener or chocolate in it.
Cat lovers: Cats get no nutritional value from peanut butter but it won't hurt them.
