Can / Should I let my cat out of his carrier in the car?

My cat is around 6 months old (a rescue/formerly feral), super skittish, and hates the car. He likes hiding in low places (mostly under the couch) when he’s scared.

I usually leave him in the carrier on the passenger seat (with view of me so he knows who’s with him), but he HATES the car and my trip home for Christmas is 2 hours long.

I’m worried about letting him out if he gets stuck underneath the seats or even tries to go by my feet and the pedals. I doubt he’d do that as he’s very well behaved (except for when he’s decided to be a menace).

I have a cat bed with a cover - small hole in the front for him to get in and out. Would he be alright if I left that on the floor for him? What’s the safest way for him to travel while being comfortable?
