I recently adopted a three-month-old female Bengal kitten, and brought it home three days ago. I already own a one-year-old Bengal (also female) and have had her since she was just a kitten too.
We set up a room in the basement with all of the necessities for the new kitten, and kept her down there for a few hours.
This is where the problems started. We had done our research beforehand and read about the best ways to introduce a new kitten to a resident cat—but we overestimated our resident cat’s personality and decided to have a face-to-face meeting after only 6 hours of bringing the new kitten home.
Now, some backstory. The new kitten is very outgoing and came from a breeder that had multiple cats roaming around at all times. Our existing cat is also very social—she regularly interacts with our relative’s poodle when they come over for a visit.
With all of that in mind, we decided to proceed with the introduction that evening. There was hissing, growling, etc. We felt we had made a big mistake. The kitten was and still is very excited and happy to interact with our resident cat. Not so much the other way around.
I’m hoping someone can help me decide what to do next. Our resident cat is clearly intrigued (she hovers around the room and sniffs at the space under the door) but still swats and hisses at the kitten whenever they see each other face to face.
We plan to keep them separated for a few days, but I would like any further advice any of you have to give! Ideally I want these two young cats to be friends, but even just being able to tolerate one another would be great.
Thanks in advance!
