Hi everyone! My husband and I are Americans in Greece and we have been fostering a wonderful kitten who is FIV+ and mostly-blind. As you can imagine, this is a hard sell when it comes to finding a forever home, and while he is a darling, we can't keep him because we have two FIV- cats and who have be separated from him, and he deserves a life beyond the boundaries of our living room.
However, we have a friend in the US who adopted a pair of FIV+ littermates as kittens, one of whom passed away last summer at the age of 7. While she had sworn off another cat, she's fallen in love with our foster through the videos/photos we share of him and believes her cat will benefit from having a companion again. My husband is flying to the US in a few weeks for work and our friend has offered to meet him to collect our foster. Serendipity, right?
The problem is that our foster is very, very loud. The woman who rescued him from the streets as a kitten wanted to call him Eurayle, which is the name of Medusa's sister whose scream could kill. He's a Siamese mix, so even when he's happy, he's still talking to us and pretty much sounds like this all the time. As soon as we get him into the carrier, he starts yowling. While we've only ever flown with our cats in cabin, we realize that a 14-hour flight where he is likely to be very vocally unhappy will drive everyone on the plane out of their minds, so flying him in the hold seems to be our only solution (we've also looked into animal couriers and our least expensive quote was 2.5k, which neither we nor our friend can afford).
When I googled "cat flying in cargo," I was met with pages upon pages of horror stories. So I've come here to ask if anyone here can shed some light on the subject: is there anyone who has flown their cat cargo and feels as if it's safe and fine? If so, can anyone recommend a good airline to do so? Thank you!
