Is it cruel to crate an adult dog for several hours on one specific occasion when he typically has free run of the house?

My 9 year old Cairn Terrier Cash hasn’t had to be in a crate since he was a puppy. He has free run of our home and does wonderfully with it. We are going to a friends place tonight, and then going out to celebrate her birthday. Typically we find someone to watch Cash at our home when we are gone overnight, but our arrangements fell through.

Our friend said we are absolutely welcome to bring Cash along, and we have brought him there before. She has two dogs of her own and they get along great. The problem, though, is that while Cash is perfectly potty trained at our home, he sometimes has “accidents” at other houses that aren’t his. We feel comfortable bringing him places as long as we are there with him, because then he will just sit in our laps or near us and if he starts to wander off we can call him back or let him outside. So I don’t feel comfortable letting him wander at her home when we are not there with him.

He does have a crate, but we really only use it for vet trips. He hasn’t spent any real time in it since he was a puppy. Would it be cruel, on this one occasion, to put him in the crate at her home while we are out? It could be 4-6 hours that we are gone. Or should we cancel our plans and stay home?
