I got a dog about a year ago to keep my other dog company. The new dog is about 3 and the older dog is about 6. They generally get along extremely well. However, in times that are “unusual” (having a lot of people over, visiting someone else’s house, or just a lot going on) my new dog seems to get overwhelmed and out of fear/something she bites my other dog by the scruff or rear end and just latches on.
We have tried generally avoiding trigger situations but as we travel a lot it can be hard to do. Most recently we got back from traveling to family’s houses for the holidays, and kept them well separated so there was no issue. But the first day back, both dogs sprinted after a squirrel out the back door when let out to potty, and this triggered the bite reaction of my new dog. (They chase squirrels out the door like this constantly, so I think it’s tied to them being back after a week of traveling).
The bites are generally not very bad and we quickly separate the two, but once it caused a deep couple of wounds that got infected which resulted in a pretty expensive surgery for my older dog to treat an abscess.
Is there...ANYTHING..I can do besides separate them or rehome. I tried going to a dog trainer but they really weren’t much help and just spoke in general about how to help dogs behave around other dogs while out on walks..which isn’t the issue really.
The new dog is a very good pup in general, and outside of these sporadic, every few months outbreaks the dogs both get along well. They sleep in the same bed, have no issues eating by each other or sharing toys, go on runs/walks together, and even cuddle a lot of the time.
I really really don’t want to rehome but these bite incidents are out of hand and it’s really traumatic for me and my partner, and I’m sure for both of the dogs.
