Hey everyone. I know there have been a lot of posts about people asking about their diabetic cats, but I can't seem to find this particular thing being discussed. My mom's cat is overweight and was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. We got him some special food and have been giving him insulin twice a day, but my concerns are about his eating habits. We got a lower carb type of dry food for him, but also some wet food too. The issue is that he was used to grazing when he ate before his diagnosis, where he would take a few bites and then come back later and just snack throughout the day. I'm trying to commit him to 2 mealtimes a day, but he's not eating very much when I feed him. I give him the recommended amount for a cat his size and he barely touches it.
So my question is this: about how long after his insulin shot is he allowed to eat, and also is it unsafe for him to graze throughout the day on his food so long as it falls under the daily recommended amount? I'm just worried that he meows all day like he's hungry but then he barely touches his food. With his wet food he only licks up the gravy and doesn't eat many of the morsels, and with his dry food he only takes a few bites. And yes, I have been mixing his old food with the new food to try and get him acclimated. I just want to give him the most opportunity for him to eat his twice-daily meals without putting his health at risk.
Any advice about this would be appreciated, so thank you in advance.
