New Cat Terrified?

So I made the move and adopted a cat. At the shelter she was so sweet and seemed to really like me (she even let me hold her instead of the shelter peeps).

The moment I let her out when I brought her home she bolted off and hid. She never comes out unless it’s night, and if she’s visible at all she just stares at me like I’m going to drop everything and murder her real quick. She also has occasional (I’m assuming stress-induced) diarrhea...

So far our highest point together was when I gave her chicken once. Put it near her, she looked at me like I was going to poison her, I walked away and she ate it. That was pretty cool I guess. Apart from that she wants nothing to do with me.

I try to avoid eye contact and junk, and I’ll spend periods of time each day chilling relatively near her hiding spot and just softly talk about whatever so she gets used to me. Doesn’t seem to have any effect.

Any tips for getting our relationship on the right track? (It’s been about a week of this now)

I know this question is pretty common, and the answer is usually time, but I can’t help but worry she’s not gonna come around or something.

Thanks ya’ll.

TL;DR Newly adopted cat scared out of its mind constantly. How can I make her feel safe?
