I have a 2 year old westie that my family has unfortunately not house trained but I want to try starting now. We live in a high rise apartment where letting him pee indoors on a pee pad is ideal.
So far, what ive done is leave a pee pad against a wall and occassionally leading him to the pee pad while on a leash. I let him sniff the pee pad and hope he urinates while im near him but he has yet to do so. Since he doesnt urinate, i let him off the leash to walk around the living room freely and i go back into my room. He urinates when i happen to not be observing him aka when im in my room.
The method of praise and treats appears to be very useful in pee pad training but i dont catch him in the act often enough to lead him to the pee pad and positively reinforce him. Is it really necessary for me to observe him at all times? Any tips regarding indoor pee pad training for adult dogs?
