I have a rather peculiar problem with my Labrador Retriever, Amy, who's 4 years old.
Earlier I had two Labs that lived on for over 13 years without any medical issues. After one of them died of breast cancer, I got Amy. Shortly afterwards, the other also died.
Amy was potty trained and was very well-behaved for about 2 years, when she had some kind of a fungal attack leading to hair loss and lethargy. After a dose of antibiotics, she was kind of ok. But a year later, she had a recurrence of a similar condition, but this was a more virulent type of bacterial + fungal infection. We went through three or four vets, but Amy's condition worsened with lots of scratching, and serious hair loss in parts of her body. She also became listless and lost her spontaneity.
Finally a month back, we found a vet who told us that this was a new infection that was going around, and prescribed a course of medicines for her, together with a shampoo and an ointment. She began to recover and has improved significantly, and her coat is now growing back. My family is delighted at her recovery.
However, in the course of her illness, she has somehow lost her potty training. She now pees on her mat while in the house, and poops just outside the front porch. It is hard to predict how/when this happens and it's very embarrassing.
It is not as if she lets go wherever she is (which I would assume is incontinence)...she seeks out her mat and then pees on it.
Also, we have had a cat and kittens for the first time from around 5 months back...I'm not sure if this could be a trigger for her behavior.
Any help on how to retrain Amy would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading!
