Taking puppies away from mom?

I have a very pretty male golden retriever and we have been thinking of finding a female to breed him with and keep as a companion. I was wondering about how mom's do when you take their pups away. I know cats are basically happy to get rid of their kittens when they are old enough because cats are independent and that's natural but dogs are pack animals. So wouldn't that mean that taking a pup away from it's mom would be like taking a child away from it's human parents? We couldn't keep all the puppies for obvious reasons but I'd rather not touch that with a ten foot pole than break my dogs heart.
