Thoughts on professionals breeding cats?

Crossposting from r/cats.

I've noticed a lot of posts on r/cats where people disagree with even the IDEA of having cat breeds, nevermind anyone breeding cats on purpose. There are "too many cats" already and cat breeds "serve no purpose", so breeding purebreds shouldn't be a thing.

I have the same view on cat breeding as I do dog breeding. I know there is a cat overpopulation epidemic worldwide, but I don't see an issue with professional cat breeders breeding for health and temperament.

Cats should not breed on their own. Backyard breeding, "oopsie” pregnancies, strays breeding, feral cats breeding, outside cats breeding, and barnyard cats breeding are the problem. 95% of cats should be spayed and neutered but, statistically, most cats aren't. Truly reputable breeders are fine by me.

Hybrid vigor only goes so far. Breeding cats properly helps produce healthier cats because you know if the parents have genetic issues, temperament issues, etc. It also helps the domestication process of cats as a whole; maybe cats will be even tamer in a few centuries if bred more.

Breeding reputably helps develop current breeds more. A lot of breeds aren't ideal right now - the exaggerated Persians and Scottish Folds as a whole are two examples - but can be made healthier with help.

Even if breeders stopped breeding purebred, that's theoretically okay. They're still doing the testing. If only reputable breeders bred cats and everyone neutered their cats, then we wouldn't have feral cats.
