Travelling Abroad for a few weeks. What's best to do for kitty? (X-post from /r/cats)

Hey guys, I recently adopted my wonderful cat Jayko. I am currently a grad student in Wisconsin but will be flying to Bangladesh to get married next month. I had traveled to Chicago for 4 days and left Jayko at a vet which provided boarding for 15$ a day.

I will however now be gone for 21+ days and am wondering what to do about Jayko. As I have trips to Minnesota and Florida coming up soon as well.

Currently, I made a reservation for Jayko at boarding again just in case.

My options are:

1) Let him go to boarding. This will be expensive as each time I need to uber there and back for drop off and pick up as well as the cost to keep him there. He has 23 hours in a large cage and 1 hour to move around while hes there.

2) Buy an auto feeder+waterbowl which is on sale for Cyber Monday, and pay a classmate (50-100$ over the 21 days) to visit him maybe 1-2 times a week to clean his litter box and fill up the water/food.

Option 2 seems to be cheaper overall + has the benefit of letting me go to shorter trips in the future and leaving him unsupervised at home where he has more space as well.

I am very much leaning towards option 2, but am worried if the lack of human interaction will be a problem for my little boy.

What would you guys do in this situation? Do you have any other suggestions? Are there any auto feeders you guys recommend?

Thank you!
