I'm at my wit's end with my roommate's cat and don't know what to do about it anymore. So, I've lived with my roommate for about 6 months now (found on craigslist), and she has 1 bunny and 2 female cats (one is ~2 years old, the other one is about 8 months old).
The 8 month old kitten is very sweet, calm and playful. She used to be a lot more active around the house, but after getting her first heat/spayed, she is now more neutral and usually stays in my roommate's room unless she is eating. The 2 year old cat is very...different. I can tell that my roommate doesn't play with her cats enough, but they are very well taken care of (they have numerous toys, ample food, a cat tree, scratching posts all around the apartment, etc.). The 2 year old cat will whine nonstop if someone is not near her (she is whining as I type this), or if MY door is closed. Emphasis on my door, because my roommate always leaves her door open a crack during the day/night for the cats to go in and yet the 2 year old cat never does - she often scratches at my door to come in (I will not let my roommate's cats in because of a flea issue I had in the past with a different roommate's cat.)
If I am in the kitchen cooking, the 2 year old will constantly head butt in between my legs and roll over, squirm on her back on the floor meowing aggressively at me. I've taken this to mean she wants to play, and while I'm waiting for my food, if the cat toys are out in the living room I'll gladly play with her. This lends to my next issue, however...if I start playing with the 2 year old cat, the 8 month old will hear and join in on the fun. When the 8 month old comes out, the 2 year old cat will go under the couch and hide and her playtime is over. If I ignore the 2 year old while cooking and she is at my feet, the second I try to move away or walk around her, she'll swat aggressively at me and today she broke skin with her claw.
I do want cats of my own someday as I love them and so I'm trying to be patient and understand, but my roommate's cats are not my cats and she doesn't seem to understand this 2 year old's need for attention, nor do I think I should be getting scratched for just going about my business in the kitchen/living area. I don't know what to do anymore and any advice is gladly welcomed!!
