Is it okay to adopt a friendly kitten from an outdoor colony?

The other day I stumbled on 3 young cats off of a running trail. They looked healthy, but small. Their coats didn’t suggest that they spend any time indoors. Somebody clearly feeds them judging by plastic bowls littered all over the grass. I didn’t see any cropped ears to suggest TNR. Somewhat concerned, I brought my partner back to where I found the cats to feel out the situation. We found 4 more cats! I did see 1 older kitty with a cropped ear. All 7 cats seem happy together in their colony, and they probably shelter in a nearby warehouse. A young couple out walking their dog told us that they help feed the cats, as does a woman who lives in an apartment near the trail. We hung out for a bit, fed the cats, and decided to leave it at that.

Today I went back to say hi to the cats after my run with some treats. One of the young cats (probably at least 4 or 5 mos old) is especially bold and VERY friendly. It let me pet it all over and rub its cheeks, and took treats directly out of my hand. My partner and I have actually been in the market for a 2nd cat, but kittens are apparently in high demand. I’m starting to wonder if I could provide a good home for this little one. I think it’s young enough that it could probably be further socialized and adjust to a new home, but I’m not sure what the protocol is for community cats. Would it be a mistake to take it from its family and outdoor life?

If I do take it, I’d leave a note for the caretakers and get it to a vet ASAP. I’ll also keep visiting its family to make sure that someone takes them to a vet for TNR. Still just not sure if it’s the right thing to do. I’d appreciate any thoughts.
