Maine Coon mix with hyperesthesia has mats in fur, won't let me brush them out. Looking for suggestions

My 5 year old Maine Coon mix has really fine, long fur. We never had issues with it until recently, she had to have an emergency abdominal surgery in December and afterwards between some down time and weight gain, her fur started to become matted near her tail.

Problem is she has hyperesthesia, and although sometimes when she gets in moods where she wants all the pets, she hates when she's pet or brushed on her back unprompted. You can see her skin start to roll and she will become aggressive. I don't blame her, I feel like it's probably painful for her. It's at the point where a little bit of brushing won't help, it needs some work. I don't want it getting any worse, but I'm not sure what to do. I'd feel bad making her go to the vet to get her fur shaved (she's a very anxious kitty), not that her vet would take her right now for something so minor during COVID19 anyways.

Any long haired cat owners have any suggestions?
