Any ideas on why my extremely sweet cat just had a random burst of aggression?

My cat Paul was laying on my bed, just hanging out and purring and having a good time like he usually does. No one touched him, there was no loud noises, nothing abnormal in the slightest was going on. Then, out of no where he started screaming and charged at my boyfriend and started biting him and growling and shrieking. There wasn’t any claws involved either which I thought was odd. Just intense biting. My boyfriend got scared and tried to push him off the bed but he just came charging back teeth barred like a tiger. He grabbed him by his neck scruff to keep his teeth away and I was able to hold him and carry him into the kitchen without any trouble. My boyfriend came out to the kitchen behind me and the cat was fine and let my boyfriend pet him.

My cat has never been even he slightest bit aggressive towards anything before, he is 2 years old and was given a thumbs up from his vet a couple months ago so no health problems. I’m very confused as to why this would happen honestly. My boyfriend suggested he might have had a nightmare, but he was facing me (I was sitting across from the bed) and he was fully awake. He also has not gone outside in about a year, has his rabies shots, and doesn’t have any contact with wild animals.

He was biting really hard, he even ripped a little whole in my boyfriends pants and drew a little blood. If I can avoid this in the future it would definitely be good.
