Hi guys, do you have any suggestions on how to help my rabbit keep his weight up? Here’s some background info:
- Mugsy is an 8 year old, blind, un-neutered male
- He is a giant / dwarf mix.. dwarf sized, typically around 4-5 lbs
- Lately mugsy has been weighing in at about 3lbs. I’m worried about feeling his spine, ribs, and hips
- He gets 100% Timothy hay 24/7, sometimes orchard grass hay as a treat. He used to get water out of a bowl, but since going blind switched to bottle- he drinks 1 full bottle a day. He gets a heap of vegetable variety daily. I used to give him 1/4 cup of Timothy pellets daily, lately he’s getting 1/4 of half Timothy half alfalfa pellets
- I don’t want to feed him too much alfalfa as I’ve read that the excess calcium can cause issues
- His digestion is healthy and same as always, teeth are good and not impacted (last checked March 5 2020)
- Vet told me to feed half alfalfa pellets, which as I’ve said I do, and yet he’s still boney and underweight
- I know it’s common for older rabbits to have trouble keeping their weight up, which is why I’m asking for help
Any help would be great :) thanks!
