She's always slept in the same laundry for years since she was a kitten. Her room is not too hot or cold, she's snug. Weeks will go by and she won't scratch at all, but then she goes through phases of doing it every night, and it affects our sleep (the reason we have her in the laundry in the first place is to avoid sleep disruption by her wandering around the house or jumping on beds wanting to snuggle).
We've tried blocking the inside of her door with a big board covered in sandpaper, which she doesn't like the feeling of scratching. But now she gets onto the bench and scratches the door above the board. What can we put on the bench that she won't like stepping on? Whatever we put there she climbs over or through to get to the door to scratch. e.g. we put a collection of laundry detergent plastic bottles there, but she pushes her way through them eventually. We tried putting a wide, open plastic container of shallow water that filled up the whole bench, and we found she walked along the thin edge of that to avoid the water and still managed to balance and scratch the door. So we put pegs along that edge of the water container, to block her, and she eventually knocks enough of the pegs off and then walks.
We've tried spraying her with water when she does it, she gets cross at that, but it doesn't deter her too much from doing it again. Some nights she sleeps happily all through the night in her bed, so I don't know why some nights she just wants to get out (boredom I guess), and we haven't been able to block her from getting to the door completely. If we can find something she won't/can't step on, that might stop her using the bench.
