How to get my dog (3yM, pit bull mix) to be calm around my cats

So my parents adopted a 2yo pit bull mix, Dakota, last year. This brought the pet count to 3 dogs and 2 cats. The OG dogs were calm and weren’t bothered by the cats presence. In the year he’s been with my parents, he’s gained 30 lbs (skin & bones when rescued) but is also more crate trained.

Once Dakota came home, he’s been excited to see cats and be around them. The problem is he doesn’t know how to play with them. So my parents (my mom more so) thought that it would help Dakota if they adopted a kitten (think big dog cuddling with little cat; that was my moms thought anyway). Unfortunately, he was still excited, wanted to play with his mouth and bark whenever he sees them.

Since the pandemic, I’ve moved back home with my 2 cats, but our oldest dog had to be put down. So we have 2 dogs and 5 cats. The cats spend all day in either my parents bed room or my room.

Dakota waits by the doors that lead to cats just to see them and tries to sneak in when we go in. If my room is cat free, I sometimes let him into my room to get all the sniffs. During his “cat” time, he runs around the bed and tries to find a cat under the bed. After a few minutes of sniffing and pacing, he’ll cry out bc there’s no cats.

One of my cats doesn’t like to be confined to the room all day alone and cries out loudly, but She’s scared of him.

Is there anyway that we can get him to be calm and learn the cats don’t want to play with him in the way he plays?
