how to help skittish cat adjust?

i recently (about a week ago) adopted a new cat. he’s a year old, neutered, and very playful.

i set him up in my room at first, so he could get used to the new environment, with the hope that he could eventually branch out to the rest of my home.

he’s already met my dogs and seems okay with them, except for one who LOVES cats and immediately jumps up to greet him if she sees him.

i put a screen door on my roomso he could see out, and smell the dogs through the screen. but he’s become very attached to me and screams when i leave the room. so i blocked off the hallway and hoped he would branch out that far without my dogs bugging him.

but he doesn’t want to leave my room. he won’t even follow me to the bathroom, which is immediately next to my room.

i put all my dogs out and carried him around the house so he could see everything, but he was terrified and trembling the entire time.

at the shelter, his living space was limited so i sometimes wonder if the world is just too big for him now.

i don’t know what to do. i love him and he’s incredibly attached to me and i want to help him adjust. i don’t want him to just spend his whole life in my room, scared to leave.
