How to pet my cat?

So a few weeks back I adopted a very affectionate 2 year old female cat.

When I adopted her however they neglected to mention the very affectionate part, and they actually called her a bit mean. They did however warn me that the cat had issues with men, and I am a man.

Now for the most part, things are great, to the point I can almost forget about the cat not liking men...almost until petting time.

And for my cat, she wants to be petted about every 30 minutes when shes awake. Which would be fine by me, except she wont let me.

She'll come up to me, meow, rub against my legs, flop down in front of me and show her belly, or even flat out hit me with a paw trying to get attention. The minute I extend my hand or even my fingers, she recoils, hisses, runs away and/or swats me.

Now I know these are her signs of asking for affection because she'll do the same thing to my girlfriend, whose "allowed" to pet her when she wants pets from her.

The problem is, my girlfriend's job is one, that even these days has her out of the house for days at a time. So most of the time, I'm the only available source of affection.

Further complicating my problem is, when my girlfriend is around, the cat completely allows me to pet her, cuddle with her, to the point my girlfriend jokes about the cat being her rival.

So this whole "please pet me/dont touch me" thing is only a problem when it's just me...but that's the majority of the time. And since the cat isnt getting enough attention (I play with her constantly but she wants pets) she's starting to get a bit destructive

So yeah, if any one has any tips for what to do so my cat can get the affection it wants from me, would be appreciated.
