I took my male cat outside on a leash and now he won't stop begging to go outside. I'm being proactive to provide indoor enrichment as well as using a calming collar but he continues to yowl and mark random places around the house. I also ignore him when he yowls and only give him attention when he comes up to me quietly in order to not reinforce his vocal attention-seeking behavior.
He's gone through phases like this before where he eventually forgets about the outdoors (usually during winter) but since we have the whole summer ahead of us and he gets a ton of enjoyment and relaxation from being outside, I'm not sure whether to stop taking him outside all together in hopes that he'll forget about it and become content with the indoors and windows, or if I should continue taking him outside (this time but at scheduled times instead of sporadically) with the risk that this will encourage his begging.
Has anyone had success with scheduled outdoor time for cats? Letting him out unsupervised is not an option for me. Thanks for any advice or experience anyone can offer!
