My aunt and cousin have been terrible owners of their puppy. How can I make them see what’s wrong and convince them to give me the puppy?

My aunt and cousin got a pug puppy around September of last year. Everything was going on “fine”.

They already had a Chihuahua dog but they wanted another one and since the puppy arrived, both dogs have been sleeping outside the house.

I have been always against that but today the worst thing happened. Early I left my two dogs to their vet’s appointment for a teeth cleaning, a bath and nail clipping; after that I went to visit my aunt and she was telling me that both dogs have lots of fleas and that the pug puppy had diarrhea, so my aunt wanted to take them to the vet as well, and I recommended the place my dogs go.

When I went to pick up my boys, I found my aunt and cousin there with the two dogs and I got really mad because the dogs not only had fleas, they had lice and ticks as well!!! Literally they were infested and my aunt had never taken the puppy to the vet before and she is missing all her puppy shots!!!!!!!

In the end, she paid for one shot and some stuff for giving them a bath.

I’m actually really mad and upset, they were taking good care of their Chihuahua who is 4 years old but they were awful to this puppy.

Unfortunately having a pet isn’t cheap and it brings lots of responsibility... I have spent lots of money on my dogs on vets and good food and everything, I don’t regret it because I love them and I provide them lots of care as well and I focus on giving them the best life quality.

I understand that my aunt and cousin are struggling with lots of situations including money, but if they can’t afford all of that then why did they get a dog?

Definitely it’s not ideal and wasn’t planned, but I want to adopt their puppy to provide the same as I do to my actual dogs. I have lots of space, a big big house with a big completely closed backyard with grass and other nice plants and also I have a good stable job with a good salary. I still live with my parents who are very kind as well.

I offered my aunt and cousin that if they give me the puppy I can continue paying for the shots and everything needed and also I could give them some money as well; my aunt seemed like if she liked the idea but my cousin didn’t like it so much.

Anyway, my cousin is the worst pet owner since she left her turtle outside literally under the sun and she forgot that she had a turtle. Until my grandma went to help tidying and she found the turtle still alive but nobody knew since how long it was there... My grandma took it away and the turtle is fine now with my grandma looking after it.

I would like to any advice about how to convince them to give me the puppy. I can’t bring the law on since in my country there’s no legislation for that. Actually awful things need to have happened for police to interfere.

That puppy needs lots of care and attention and most important, medical treatment! Since she will be 1 year in July and stills missing all her shots.

I’m really grateful for all your recommendations and advices.
