My dog HAS to walk in front and we'd like to know why.

Whenever we take our dog (rescue, female, we think black lab/shepard mix) if she's not allowed to be out in front she gets super anxious and whiny. We usually walk with a stroller as we have a toddler, but she runs across its path (knocking our son in the head with the leash) which is a problem. It's so bad that if she squats to pee, if we so much as catch up to her, she will start moving again whether she is done or not, and she wont even consider pooping while we're on a walk.

Our 2 leading theories are that she's either trying to be protective of the toddler, or she thinks she's the alpha and has to be out front. Is there something we are missing, and is there a way to get her to relax? We use a spiked choke collar on her because without it she would pull so hard against the leash it would cut off her air.
