My new cat (11 months) likes to get close to me and then frantically run away.

So I got my first cat a few days ago, I got him from some owners who gave off the impression they neglected him a little so I was not expecting him to get comfortable anytime soon.

However, after a day of hiding under my sofa he finally came out to have an explore, we bonded pretty well and he liked to be petted a little but he is still very nervous of course.

I am a bit disheartened because after such a good day bonding and to the point where he was chilling next to me on my bed, now he keeps coming up to me and then frantically running under the sofa?

Does anyone know why this is? I feel like I’ve took like 2 steps back from our bonding and I’m worried he is terrified of me, I give him his space and allow for him to explore but every time he comes to be if I go to give him some fuss he frantically runs.

Obviously I understand he’s still in a brand new environment and it will take time to adjust but I just want to know that I’m not doing anything wrong.
