Four months ago we brought a kitten home and kept him separate from my resident cat (7yrs) another until his first vet visit. I noticed the kitten was scratching his ear a lot and head shaking. When I looked in his ear, the build up appeared very dark (like coffee) and smelled funky. I brought him in to the vet and they swabbed it and said it was just wax build-up so they did a good cleaning and sent me along. After that visit I allowed them to meet.
At his next visit a few weeks later for boosters, I asked that they look at his ear again because there was a lot of build-up again. They swabbed it and tested for mites - which was negative. They cleaned them and sent me on my way.
Fast forward a few months. He occasionally shakes his head, but they look fine. I just checked them again today and they look pink, clear, and healthy.
In the last week or two I've noticed my older cat shaking his head, scratching his ear, and overall looking annoyed with his ears. I took a look and there is that same dark build-up that the kitten had. On his left ear, there also appears to be a reddish spot, perhaps where he has been scratching.
I have some Zymox ear treatment with hydrocortisone that I can put on it. I plan on bringing him in to the vet when they can see me, but in the meantime I would love to get thoughts. It seems strange to me that this looks just like what the kitten had - but if it wasn't mites, how would the older cat have gotten it, they are both indoor only? I feel like the vet would have caught at one of the visits were it an infection- but this just seems strange.
- Anyone experience something like this?
- Any success using Zymox?
