On Christmas Day 2018, a cat my wife and I had co-owned through our dating and marriage for 8 years passed away. About 3 months later we adopted a young female cat, Penny (she was 4-6 months old at the time), who was spayed and litterbox trained though we had some difficulty with that at first (we had to put the litterbox in our bathroom, we gradually transitioned her to a litterbox in the basement but she does use it regularly). We also own a dog (Shelby) that we have had for almost 6 years, the two of them get along very well (Penny actually seems very fond of Shelby).
About 3-4 months after we got her, we bought new rugs for our living room and dining room (3 total, the whole area is hardwood floor). I don't know if she peed on the old rugs at all but for some reason she has been consistently peeing on the dining room rug which is under our dining room table. We had noticed an odor but did not realize how bad it was until a couple months ago when we moved the table and found multiple (10+) stains on the rug where she had urinated on it. We got a carpet shampooer and shampooed the rug with pet odor eliminator shampoo, but she still continues to do it, usually when we are asleep or not nearby though we have caught her doing it a few times. My wife is currently working from home and is using the dining room table as her desk; she has a blanket on the chair she is using and twice now we have found where she had urinated on part of the blanket that was on the floor, and I think she has peed on the hardwood too but not as often as on the rug.
We are at our wits end with this, she is otherwise a good cat except for this particular problem. We can't imagine it is stress related as it has been consistent and she lives a good life with us. I scoop the litterbox frequently and she is most definitely still using it on a regular basis. The dining room is not near any outside doors but it does have a window she sits in a lot (we never open that particular window though), could this be some kind of territorital thing? It seems odd as there are other windows she sits in just as often and she does not urinate near those windows. I do know there are at least 2 cats that come around our house almost every night (I installed a Ring camera and I see them on the camera around 1-2 AM almost every night, they usually do not come up on our porch but are around the front of the house. The dining room window does not face the porch but looks out the side of the house). We don't let Penny outside and rarely open the windows, regardless the urinating seems to happen no matter what time of year it is.
We've seen a suggestion elsewhere about putting food there as she won't urinate near where her food is, but we can't put food out there as the dog will eat it.
Sorry for the long post...any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated with this, my wife has a better relationship with the cat than I do and she is almost to the point of giving her away because of this whole issue.
