Pets blind from birth vs later in life

In humans, I've heard/read that being born without a particular sense (sight, hearing are two that come to mind) can change the way you develop your other senses, i.e. people born without sight may find navigating more natural than someone who has to go through a learning curve later in life.

Does anyone have any experience, anecdotal or otherwise, with pets born without a particular sense versus pets that lose senses later in life? Many animals have the benefit of an additional strong sense of smell, which humans lack, and I'm curious about how much that can compensate for lack of sight.
