Apologies in advance if this is rambly!
My neighbors are terrible dog owners. They’ve owned 3 in the time I’ve lived in my apartment (1.5 years). The most recent is a very young male husky. He’s a sweet looking boy and very playful. They keep him out on a chain in their driveway (a small easement between their house and mine, maybe 15-20 feet between houses). I’m working from home and my desk overlooks the driveway. He’s out there maybe half the day, but it seems it’s his only outdoor time. I’ve seen them take him on walks maybe 3 or 4 times in the few months they’ve had him. He whines and whines and whines on his chain all day. Until today, I’ve never seen them have a water bowl out for him and he usually drinks dirty water from a tarp. Today, the son brought him out some water because it was about 85 out. When he whines, his owners either ignore him or scream at him. Yesterday I saw his owner hit him when he wouldn’t go in the house.
Today, I got fed up after an hour of whining with him sitting in the hot sun with maybe half an inch of water in his bowl. He was crying at their door to be let in and his owner just opened the door to scream at him and left him out. I emailed our local SPCA to report the abuse and look for any resources that might help them.
Now I feel bad for reporting them. They want to know the address and my phone number to get more info. I know the dog isn’t being treated well, but now I have this guilt that this families dog will be taken. The son seems to care for him, but the parents are not nice to him at all. They don’t seem well off, the property is a mess. Although I know this dog isn’t being treated well, I also feel bad for reporting it. I feel bad if the kid has his dog taken away.
Any advice/anything? I know I did the right thing but I still feel awful about it.
