Separating two cats who were litter mates and grew up together...bad idea?

Hello. My family and I adopted two kittens 11 years ago. They were from the same litter. One of the cats definitely bonded to me, she is 100% my cat and dislikes anyone else. The other cat is my dad's technically, though he's really more of a family cat who will sit with anybody. We also have a dog who gets along with them all just fine.

Not quite a year ago, I adopted a rescue kitten with my boyfriend at the time. Bad idea in hindsight, but at the time we were sure we'd be moving in together and getting married and yada yada. Anyways, we are split up now and the kitten staying with him is absolutely out of the question. So he is now my kitten and I am his human. He has definitely bonded to me.

Now to my dilemma. I am moving out of my parents house in the near future. I am going to be moving into a townhouse and as far as I can tell they almost all have a limit to two small pets. The kitten is of course coming with me as well as the cat who is mine. This means the other cat would continue to live with my parents.

How likely is it that this would cause distress for the two older cats? Particularly the one who would be left behind with my parents. They really aren't close anymore these days. The basement is one cat's "territory" and the upstairs is the other's. If anything they tend to fight a bit when they are together, the male cat likes picking on the female cat and it ends with hissing and growling. They haven't cuddled and slept together since they were kittens.

So considering they don't really get along that well, I would like to think it wouldn't be a huge issue? But my dad is very concerned that the cat who is left behind would be upset by this. He has asked me to take all 3, but I just don't see that being a viable option. Even if it were approved, I just don't think the places I'm looking at would be spacious enough for them to all have their own areas either.

Thoughts?
