Should we get a kitten?

This is my first post here, if I'm breaking any rules please let me know!

My boyfriend of 4 years and I have recently moved in together. We have talked about owning pets for the past few years. I have wanted a cat since I was a little girl, and finally got to live with one when my mother remarried so I have some experience. My boyfriend likes cats but is very allergic. We have considered 'hypoallergenic' cats, but have made a plan to have him exposed to a litter before adoption to make sure he would be safe.

I am a student but am employed, and he has recently graduated. There is also a possibility that we may be moving in 1-3 years, but we are currently living in a house with two little fish.

Part of me is saying to wait, and another is thinking that we could provide a kitten with a loving home.

Would getting a kitten be a catastrophic (pun intended) mistake?
