Adopted a 4 year old cat!

We adopted a beautiful 4 year old cat yesterday. She's a little on the chubbier side so we did a lot of research and decided to try the hill science dry food. She will not eat it. My bf said he has heard good things about blue buffalo. But I am pretty sure I read an article in the last year about cats and dogs getting sick and puking blood after eating it. I cant find the article now. Has anyone heard of something like this? Or has a good recommendation for a domestic short hair calico? We want to get her to a healthy weight to avoid any heart/health issues. This is my first pet so I want to make sure I take care of her!!! TIA!!!
