Adopting a cat from petsmart

So my mom took my sister to petsmart because she wanted a pet parakeet and I’ve been bugging my mom about getting a cat lately so they went to a section where they keep cats in cages or something and sent me pictures of them. I’ve always heard about horrible things that petsmart does to their animals and I’ve gotten rather against getting a cat from petsmart since maybe they treat the cats the same way rumors say they treat their reptiles and rodents. I read some articles and I found that petsmart works with local adoption centers and offer up spots in their stores so it’s easier to get people to adopt the cats or something and that petsmart doesn’t get the profits from adoption fees. I also read that the cats there tend to be rescues and sometimes they’re friendlier towards other people. So I guess I just want to know if all of this is true and I can make sure that I am adopting a cat the same way I would from an adoption center and these cats have been getting the same care they would be getting from a normal shelter. I may be getting to picky or something but this is potentially where I could get my first cat and I want to make sure I’m doing this right.
