FYI it's a litter that goes over your toilet bowl, and over time you eventually remove pieces from the middle outward as the cat gets used to the toilet, allowing it to piss and shit right into the toilet. I cat-sit for a cat trained to do this. If shes upset she will deliberately shit elsewhere, but only if she knows that her owners are gonna clean it. If I'm cat-sitting her, she doesnt do that at all. But I'll be honest, you think a 500 sq ft apartment would smell like cat (that bad litter and cat stink) but it does not. The cat is down to the final ring on the sitty kitty, no litter involved, uses the toilet as similar to a human as she can. It will change your life. Train them young though. Older cats may be resistant.
