I have a slightly older dog (8 years) and she will NOT stop peeing and pooping in my apartment. She was potty trained as a puppy, but this has been and off issue the past few years and I'm running out of ideas on how to get her to stop. I live in an apartment so she doesn't have her own yard, but I take her on frequent outings to potty. I've tried increasing her outings, taking her on longer walks, etc. It doesn't help. It's not an incontinence or medical issue as I've already had her checked and the vet found no issues.
I always make sure to take her out right before I go to bed and sometimes she pees, but she never wants to poop outside. But once we come in and when I fall asleep (I can be awake a few hours after taking her out, but she always waits until I'm asleep), she goes on the carpet.
She used to go in the living room so I started shutting her with me in the bedroom thinking she wouldn't go where she slept. She still does it. Tried moving her food in the room thinking she wouldn't go where she eats. Still does it.
I try crating her, but she just whines constantly without rest for hours. Which means I also don't sleep. I work and have grad classes and I can't survive on not sleeping so crating isn't working.
I've tried the enzyme sprays that are supposed to kill the smell of their urine and discourage them from going in the same spot. It doesn't help.
When she goes outside she gets praised and rewarded and when she goes inside she gets in trouble (ie told no, put her nose in it, etc).
She is also spayed.
Are there any suggestions?? I'm about to lose my mind and I can't stand the constant mess, but I'm at a total loss as what I should do.
