Need advise - rescued cat pees outside litter box, 2nd cat may cause problem

Ugh, "advice" please help. Short version of very long story. We have a 14 y.o. male (neutered) cat. Over a year ago we took in a 6 y.o. female (spayed) cat to keep her from being euthanized. Both are now medicated to chill them out a bit (after hiring cat whisperer because they were not getting along and it was disruptive to animals -dog too- and humans alike this is what was recommended). They now lie together, pass without hissing etc. All great!....except - we still have "new" cat's litter box and food in my daughter's bathroom (where we had to keep new cat for many many months until vaccinations, sickness passed etc.). EVERY DAY we clean urine spots around the bathroom. We have tried about every spray, neutralizer, calming potion etc. but she still does it. I think old cat (he's sneaky) might be getting in that bathroom occasionally and leaving his scent and that's the problem. We, of course, hoped that eventually we could put all litter boxes together in one room and they could do their business in harmony - like old cat and 2 previous cats - did. So far, no go. So now to the question. Do I get some type of barrier that only new cat can hurdle to get to bathroom? (or a sensored gated door maybe?)... or do I just move all litter boxes to the same room and hope for the best? Or is there something else that has worked for you? Thanks in advance.
