Adopt from a shelter/rescue or take kitties from a rehoming situation?

I’m finally in a place where I can have my own pets and so I am hoping to adopt a bonded pair of adult cats in the next few weeks. As I spend the next couple of weeks considering my options, I had just assumed I would go to a shelter to get a couple of cats, and visited one that I really liked this past weekend. However, my workplace has its own page where people who work there can post ads for things, including pets needing rehoming. Someone just posted a pair of 9 year old cats that need to be rehomed due to the unexpected passing of their owner.

My question then becomes, is it better to adopt from a shelter or take cats from a situation like this so that they don’t have to go to a shelter at all?
