Advice for bathing a "snappy" dog??

Hi all, We have an adorable dog that is good about 80% of the time. He is a Pomeranian crossed Schitsu, so he's not a large dog. The problem is he doesn't like being picked up and he doesn't like people coming at him with things. You can pat and scratch him with your hand, but the moment you bring something out, like a leash or brush (for example) he freaks out. He always seems to be on alert as well. I'm looking for advice on how I can go about trying to give him a bath, he hasn't had one in ages because we simply can't pick him up and put him in the laundry sink. He will grit his teeth and snap/bite. If you want an example of how bad this problem is... We've had to have a vet come out and sedate him, just to give him a shave. I honestly love this dog and I know its not his fault that he's like the way he is. I want to stick by him and do whatever I can to help support him. He's a gorgeous, nice dog when responsibilities aren't needed. Any advice is appreciated...
