Advice for taking cats on a long car journey

Hi

My wife and I are moving back from Switzerland to the UK. We have 2 cats that we brought over with us. When we moved to Swiss we used an agency to fly them over, which was expensive. To go back, for various reasons as well as the cats, we're going to drive and take them with us in the car

This isn't asking for advice with regards admin (i.e. the paperwork, pre-trip vet visit, vaccinations, etc - that's all in hand), it's more to do with the actual logistics of the drive itself.

The drive from Geneva to Calais will be about 8 to 9 hours (including stops). Then there will be an hour or two on the Eurotunnel, and we then stay overnight at my parents who live 20 minutes from the UK side of the tunnel. The next day is then a 2 hour drive to the final destination.

They have spacious crates - the company who flew them over originally built wooden crates which we still have - so they will have space to sit up, move around slightly. But there's not really going to be room in the car to let them out in the car itself at any point. And I don't like the idea of letting them out of the car itself.

The bottom of the crates are lined with some kind of special absorbent soft lining which is supposed to suck up liquids, so should be ok for toilets.

So does anyone have any tips or advice, from experience maybe? In particular I would be interested in thoughts about feeding them. My hope is that they will do the typical cat thing and just hunker down after initial moaning.

Thanks in advance for any advice
