Advice on e-collar for 5-month-old cat after neutering?

I picked up my new shelter cat on Friday after he had a neutering procedure. The shelter gave him to me with an e-collar on and told me they'd given him a 3-day pain control vaccination. The discharge papers said it was okay to take the e-collar off sometimes to allow him to eat and drink, so I ended up taking pity on him and removing it for a break.

When I put it back on, though, he managed to pull the cotton band around his face trying to get the e-collar off, and now every time I come home he's managed to completely pry the e-collar off from my knots. Sometimes I'll leave him be but keep an eye on him. So far he's just been licking the stitches, not biting at them, and as far as I can see the stitches aren't loose or anything...I actually can't see the stitches at all.

Should I take him back to the vet and have them put the e-collar back on him for good? (I wouldn't risk "breaks" this time until he's fully healed.) Or should I leave him be and just keep an eye out for licking/biting? He's only 4 days into the healing process. I know licking the stitches can still cause an infection, but I mean...crawling around a litter box and laying around dusty floorboards doesn't???
